Alcohol: How much is too much?

Published On: April 24, 2026

When was the last time you thought about how much you drink?

Many people are surprised by what counts as moderate drinking. Did you know that a lot of common drinks actually contain more than one standard drink?

What’s considered moderate alcohol consumption?

  • Men: 2 drinks or less per day
  • Women: 1 drink or less per day

Too much alcohol can do more than ruin your night (and your morning); it can take a serious toll on your health over time.

  • Injuries and accidents
  • Poor sleep and low energy
  • High blood pressure and liver disease
  • Depression and anxiety

In the United States, about 178,000 deaths each year are linked to excessive alcohol use.

The good news: drinking less alcohol lowers your health risks.
